Kc's Letter

As you may have heard,  Governor Grey Davies is preparing to cut the budget for California Community Colleges dramatically. One of the areas that he proposed to make very deep cuts is DSP&S (Disabled Students Programs and Services).  These proposed cuts will deeply effect services to our population, a population which already has great difficulties in financial abilities to go to school, get job training and be on a level playing field at school and in the workplace.
We need to let the Governor and all the state senators and assembly people that this is not acceptable!!
I want to put in the agenda for the first meeting that we discuss this and plan an action. My thoughts are to perhaps plan some kind of letter and signature signing for all GCC students - that we could send to Sacramento. DSO has got to come out first and hard on this!  Planning  fun activities and fund raising for the club, I believe, needs to take a back step for now.
If the budget cuts that the Governor wants take place, DSPS will be greatly damaged and not able to serve the disabled population as well as it has. ( and we all know - that DSPS needs to more, as it is) The Governor can not "fix" the budget on the backs of the most dis-enfranchised and poorest citizens of California!!
I do believe that this is an extremely serious situation. Perhaps, we can do some fun event with this. But, we need to gather signatures from all of the members of the  club and the greater GCC community and send a letter to the Gov. that this is unacceptable.
This may be the most important thing that DSO can do for it's members and all students.
I do not have Dave's email address so maybe you can forward this to him.  I will be at GCC on the first day of classes--Feb. 18th. Call me or email me.  If our motto is "Let's make a difference"... now is the most important time to do so.
I believe that Joy Cook is going to come to our first meeting (I think one of you told me this!) Perhaps, she will be talking about this issue.  But, let's think about an activity or simple signature drive before the first meeting.

Let's make a difference and let's make it now!
